The fall video game release season is right around the corner. Call of Duty is going back to World War II, and Destiny 2 is remaining in orbit. Microsoft has its releases all lined up for the Xbox One (and Windows), and Sony has its selection of PS4 exclusives. Then, of course, you have your bevy of multi-platform releases.
Sports Games
Sport games are on their way, including FIFA 18, NBA 2k18, WWE 2k18, all with the latest tech to show off that finely rendered sweat and skin pores, making for more beautiful videos game you need to play.
We’ll also get to see if Call of Duty sales are going to continue to decline slowly (although even Infinite Warfare sold well over 7 million copies. But Black Ops 3 sold twice that amount). Will bringing the series back to its World War 2 roots be enough to boost sales, or will the series still continue to decline – while still selling truckloads?
Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is just but one of the games coming out in September. The general consensus from people who played the beta last month is that Destiny 2 is more Destiny, but bigger and better. This time around, it seems as though Bungie didn’t forget to include a story. If rumors about that are true, then Destiny 1 had some semblance of a story prior to release, only to have it cut at the last second. That seems crazy if true, but crazier things have happened. If nothing else, its co-op for all story missions, Patrol zones, and Strikes will make for one of the best games to play with friends.
Microsoft and Sony are both light in terms of exclusives, but they will be duking it out with car games. Forza Motorsport 7 and Gran Turismo Sport are both landing within a couple weeks of each other in October. Forza will specifically be taking advantage of the Xbox One X’s souped-up hardware. And we all know how important car games are for showing off a console’s power.
Fall News for Sony
Sony has a few exclusive PS4 September releases to take note of, including Knack 2. Sure, it seemed like not everyone loved the first Knack, but enough people must have liked it because Sony is giving Knack another whack. A few Japanese games, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony and Gundam Versus, and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, are finally seeing western releases this September.
What’s in Store from Microsoft
September finally sees the release of Cuphead, a game that’s been in development since 2010, but considering the game is designed to look like it was made in the 1930s, it’s certainly not going to look too dated. And Crackdown 3 is finally hitting stores this November. Both consoles seem to be relying primarily on third-party releases this year, and there are a nice assortment of those.
Assassin’s Creed is returning from its short hiatus with Origins, and taking the game to Egypt seems to be a nice shift for the series. Ubisoft is also publishing the next South Park game, The Fractured But Whole, although Obsidian – who made the first game – isn’t involved in this one, so we’ll have to see how that turns out.
Middle Earth: Shadow of War is also dropping in October. The original game surprised many with how good it was, so it seems likely that the sequel will follow suit. And even if it doesn’t, we’ll always have Bruz the Chopper. Those are just a handful of the October video game releases. Others include Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and The Evil Within 2, both from Bethesda.
List of November Games
We’ll see some big games dropping. November is, by tradition, Call of Duty month, and that tradition will continue with Call of Duty: WWII, but Star Wars Battlefront II will also drop, and considering that EA seems to have learned from its past mistakes (this time they’re including a single player campaign), perhaps it can give Call of Duty a run for its money.
Nintendo normally plays by the beat of its own drum, but even they can’t resist the urge of big fall releases. Mario makes his first Odyssey onto the Switch in October, along with Fire Emblem Warriors, which releases on the 3DS as well. A month prior to that, Pokkén Tournament DX and Dragonball Xenoverse 2 are both making their way to the NS along with Lego Worlds and the definitive edition of Rayman Legends.
Fall is always a huge season for video games and this year is no different. Sure, while most of those really big games revealed at E3 this year aren’t quite making their way to consoles yet, a few of them are, and a few other games that were shown at E3s prior are finally being released. Still, no matter which console (or computer) you call home, you’ll have something to keep you busy these autumn months. Are there any games you’re psyched about – even ones we might’ve left off (like Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Total War: Warhammer 2)?
