The Best JRPGs of All Time

Jason

In the real world, we always have fear in our heart before taking any action. We brainstorm all the outcomes to evaluate what could go wrong. Why do we do that? Well, we only have just one life! However, that fear is whipped out when playing a RPG. After all, it’s just a game!

Normally, if we talk about JRPGs (Japanese role-playing games), only two titles cross our minds, Pokémon and Final Fantasy. However, there are many other good JRPGs that are better than these two. Most gamers prefer fast-paced games over RPGs, but still, there is still a sizable market for JRPGs.

If you plan on switching your interest to JRPGs, I have gathered a list of the best JRPGs of all time. You can pick any one; some are old, some are new, but all are packed with fun, action, and adventure!

Try it out and live the adventure that lies within.

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is not only a good JRPG, but also one of the best games of all time. A combined effort by the so-called ‘Dream Team’, which comprised of Yuji Horii (creator of Dragon Quest Series), Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy Series), and Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball), is a masterpiece still alive in the hearts of gamers. All thanks to its popularity, this SNES JRPG has been released for future consoles as well. The latest version of the game came out for iOS and Android.

Dragon Quest VIII – Journey of the Cursed King

Release date: November 15, 2005

PlayStation 2, iOS, Android, 3DS

The best one in the Dragon Quest series, this game is one of the must play JRPGs. Though the eighth installment, it is the first one that featured 3D environments and models. The game is about a quest to save the kingdom by defeating Dhoulmagus and relinquishing the curse on the king and his daughter. All editions of Dragon Quest performed superbly, but this one just went through the roof. The adventure and better graphics made every gamer fall for it. The latest version is launched for iOS and Android. If you don’t have a PS2 or 3DS, install it on your phone to save the kingdom before it’s too late.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Release date: May 13, 1996
Format:
 SNES, Wii/Wii U

The classical tale of Super Mario still makes me want to dig out my old Nintendo and cartridges to replay all the epic adventures. If we go back to the 90’s, it was the first ever Mario RPG to hit the stores that shook up the competition. A bestseller of its time, gamers had gone crazy with Mario and Bowser pairing up to take on a common enemy.  This musical and colorful adventure was an unforgettable one. A must-play SNES JRPG!

Final Fantasy 6

Release date: October 11, 1994
Format:
SNES, PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, PS3/Vita, Wii, Mobile Devices, PC

The Final Fantasy series is an all-time JRPG favorite. Even though fans aren’t amused with role-playing games as much as they used to be back in the days, whenever a Final Fantasy game is released, gamers show a keen interest. Out of the lot, Final Fantasy 6 is considered one of the best JRPGs. The superb soundtrack and storyline keep your curiosity alive through and through. Unlike other sequels, Kefka destroys the world in this one. It’s an emotional and dark quest in which you rebuild your team from scratch.

Role-playing games are always fun since you have the power to change the outcomes of your decisions. If you haven’t tried any of the above games, you’ve missed out on great escapades.
